When Jesus Challenges Everything

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. For three-and-a-half years Jesus challenged everything His disciples knew about God, faith, religion, and spirituality. He challenged their understanding of God until He was their understanding of God. He challenged their understanding of religious authority until He was their religious authority. He challenged their understanding of obedience to God until they understood that obedience to Him WAS obedience to God. Jesus challenged everything the disciples believed until He embodied what they believed. So, what’s He challenging in your life today? Discover more about discipleship in our book, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. Take Up Your Cross

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. Jesus declared, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” A cross was a feared Roman instrument of execution. In the year 71 B.C. Roman Legions under Marcus Licinius Crassus put down a slave rebellion and crucified six thousand prisoners along a 125 mile stretch of the Apian Way. One thing you knew about a man carrying a cross out of the city. You knew he wasn’t coming back. And that was Jesus’ point. To be a disciple of the Kingdom means you and I must go “all in,” or go home. Are you “all in?” To help you answer that question, I’ve written a book entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. Find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.

The Thief On The Cross

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. Two thieves were crucified with Jesus. One asked Jesus to remember him in the Kingdom. This man believed the message of the Kingdom and spent the remaining moments of his life as a disciple of the Kingdom. The second man was only willing to “believe” if Jesus would deliver him. The first thief didn’t ask to be delivered. He asked to be remembered. That’s the faith of a disciple. But the second thief didn’t want to be remembered; only delivered. In the Presence of the King, one man died a disciple, while the other died a thief. Which are you? And which am I? To help you answer that question, I’ve written a book entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. You’ll find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.

Disciples Versus Believers

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. Modern Christianity devotes its attention to the crowds. Biblical Christianity devotes its attention to the disciples. Jesus wasn’t looking to accumulate a crowd. He was looking to train and equip disciples who would carry His message of the Kingdom to the uttermost corners of the earth, regardless of the cost. Jesus was willing to experience every church’s worst nightmare – negative church growth! Jesus wasn’t seeking popularity. He was seeking to establish His Kingdom in the hearts, minds and lives of men. And for that, He needed disciples, not followers. To help you understand the difference between believers and disciples, I’ve written a book entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. You’ll find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.

Raising The Bar

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith.“True religion,” wrote A. W. Tozer, “confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time.” The same can be said of true discipleship. True discipleship confronts each of us with the reality of the Kingdom of God, and brings the demands of that Kingdom to bear on our daily lives. Jesus set a high bar for anyone answering His call to discipleship, and He refused to lower that bar for those unwilling to accept the challenge. With Jesus, discipleship became more challenging, and the lessons got harder, not easier. To help you answer God’s call to discipleship in the Kingdom, I’ve written a book entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. You’ll find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.

The Lost Kingdom

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, theologian J.I. Packer was asked the pressing need of the church today. “The Church needs to catechize itself,” he replied, “Christians today do not know what they believe.” Packer was right, and nowhere is this more evident than in the issues of discipleship and the Kingdom of God. We’ve lost our sense of the majesty of the Kingdom of God, the grand sweep of God’s plan for the ages, and our own sense of where we fit in God’s plan. To help you understand your role in God’s plan and what it means to be a disciple of the Kingdom, I’ve written a book entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. You’ll find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.

The Kingdom

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. Astronomer Carl Sagan once noted, “I can find in my undergraduate classes, bright students who do not know that the stars rise and set at night, or even that the Sun is a star.” A similar observation could be made of Christians and the Kingdom of God. For a Christian to not understand the Kingdom of God, and what it means to be a disciple of the Kingdom, is as embarrassing as Carl Sagan’s undergraduate student who doesn’t know that the stars rise and set at night, or that the Sun is a star. To help you understand the Kingdom of God, and what it means to be a disciple of the Kingdom, we’ve written a book, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. The Question

thediscipleshipminute_itunes

Welcome to the Discipleship Minute. I’m Maurice Smith. “Would you disciple us?” Those were the fateful words which changed everything. I was facilitating an area-wide organic house church gathering and had asked two young men if they would video the evening’s session. On that particular night, I talked on the importance of personal discipleship in the life of the church. Their question posed a very real and practical challenge. How do we intentionally disciple those who are seeking to become disciples of the Kingdom? The challenge and their question started me on a personal journey which resulted in writing a book designed to help you understand the Kingdom of God, and what it means to be a disciple of the Kingdom. The book’s entitled, And They Dreamt Of A Kingdom: Biblical Studies In Discipleship And The Kingdom of God. You’ll find it on our website at risingrivermedia.org; that’s risingrivermedia.org.
